Caring For Caregivers

Peninsula Agency on Aging provides Caregivers information regarding community resources available to assist them in the role of caregivers. Our Care Coordination team can provide resources that include support groups, educational training, and programs in the communities we serve.

Respite services are available to caregivers of eligible adults, age 60 and older, through Adult Day Care and Personal Care.

Family Caregiver Lunch & Learn Series - Williamsburg

All sessions, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, to be held at Thomas Nelson Workforce Center, 4135 Ironbound Road, Berkshire Hathaway-Towne Realty Building, 2nd Floor in Williamsburg, Virginia.

  • Tuesday, October 10, 2017: Technologies-Inexpensive Gadgets That Can Make Your Life Easier
    Staff from the Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS) will share gizmos and gadgets that can make your life easier. You’ll have a chance to try out a variety of “tools” that can be used around the house to improve your reach and mobility.
  • Tuesday, November 14, 2017: Take Care to Give Care – Celebrating the Caregiver in You!
    Please join us to learn ways you can take better care for yourself and learn of community resources to help make your lives a bit easier.”

Family Caregiver Lunch & Learn Series - Hampton

All sessions, Fridays – 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, to be held at Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development, 600 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA, Conference Room #1301-1303

  • Friday, October 6, 2017: Fall Prevention
    Falls can cause serious injury and disability. A physical therapist will discuss fall risk factors and demonstrate techniques for safely lifting and transferring your loved ones.
  • Friday, November 3, 2017: Communicating with Curiosity and Empathy
    Learn some simple strategies for having conversations that can help you understand what your loved one wants and needs while giving you the same opportunity to express yourself. Using curiosity and empathy, win-win solutions become more achievable.
  • Friday, December 1, 2017: Caregiver Resource Fair
    Hear from a panel of providers about various respite and community programs and resources available for family caregivers.

Community Café

All sessions, Thursdays – 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, to be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 1333 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23185

  • Thursday, October 5, 2017: Finding Your Purpose at 60 and Beyond
    Presentation followed by guided meditation session.
  • Thursday, November 2, 2017: Can you Hear me Now?
    Presentation by local audiologist.
  • Thursday, December 7, 2017: Music and Food for Health
    Start the holidays with healthy soup and cookies and learn how music improves our lives!

Free! Open to Williamsburg community residents 60 or better. Caregivers are welcome.

Chair Yoga and Meditation for Adults 60 and Over

Peninsula Agency on Aging has partnered with Shanti Garudasana, Inc., a non-profit promoting mindful movement, to offer a weekly Chair Yoga class. People with chronic pain and challenges with balance are welcome.

Location: Peninsula Agency on Aging-Williamsburg Office, 312 Waller Mill Rd., Williamsburg, 23185 (Off Bypass Rd.)

When: Every Monday 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm (No session Veteran’s Day)

Free: Come alone or bring a friend. Family caregivers: Please bring your loved one.

This program is for adults age 60 and over. No registration is required and participation is FREE. Just show up.
