Thoughts from our CEO

The Peninsula Agency on Aging, faced with ever increasing costs, still managed to
hold the line and serve 4,000 seniors during 2011 compared to 4,082 served in
2010. The Great Recession, however, has continued to make revenue generation
a real challenge.

It was also a year of challenge in other areas as the scheduled reauthorization of the
Older Americans Act was placed on the back burner, a casualty of Congressional inaction. The Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources announced plans to seek the merger of several aging and disability services agencies including the
Virginia Department for the Aging. The potential impact of a merger at that level could mean a shift in funding priorities and the possibility of diminished visibility for seniors needs.

On the home front, PAA remains committed to redouble efforts in securing funds to
offset funding cuts and to maintain necessary services as the number of seniors and family caregivers in our community continues to rise. Unfortunately, the need for in-home personal care, adult day care, and meals on wheels now exceeds current funding for these services. We are committed to pursuing every possible funding
opportunity to ensure the continuation of these programs and we are confident that
we will be successful.

While we are optimistics and believe the future holds great promise, we must adapt to a changing environment. Traditional services and funding streams are already disappearing. They must must be replaced to assure PAA is positioned to continue to provide leadership and meet the needs of a senior population that will be vastly different from the seniors we served between 1974 and 2011.

That being said, PAA's focus will remain on providing home and community-based services, allowing seniors to remain in their homes. We believe it is the desire of the vast majority of older citizens to stay in familiar surroundings as long as possible. We are confident that this focus will continue to be attractive to the individuals, organizations and agencies that support our work.
